Long-term stabilization of 15N-labeled experimental NH4+ deposition in a temperate forest under high N deposition

چکیده
High nitrogen (N) deposition levels, currently present in many industrial and agricultural regions of the world, can strongly affect functioning forest ecosystems. In a pine with strong N leaching, located Netherlands, we studied long-term fate year-long NH4+ cohort labeled 15N. A high ambient low treatment had been established at site by means roof sprinklers. Resampling pools 19 years after labeling 11 last sampling, found similar 15N deltas needles, twigs LF1 organic soil layer each treatment, indicating intensive cycling among these pools. years, label recovery decreased labile pools, while remained constant wood increased bark. Together aboveground vegetation retained less than 3% N. layers, to 23% both treatments, mineral it from 4% 13% (high N) 29% (low treatment). Within was mainly fine roots, most incorporated two density fractions, shifting fraction depth. This suggests capacity incorporate After lost substantially previous especially first, its presence 38% 54% Apparently, even this leaching ecosystem, once incorporated, well did not input-output fluxes system.

CO2 deficit in temperate forest soils receiving high atmospheric N-deposition.
Evidence is provided for an internal CO2 sink in forest soils, that may have a potential impact on the global CO2-budget. Lowered CO2 fraction in the soil atmosphere, and thus lowered CO2 release to the aboveground atmosphere, is indicated in high N-deposition areas. Also at forest edges, especially of spruce forest, where additional N-deposition has occurred, the soil CO2 is lowered, and the g...
متن کاملRapid deposition of oxidized biogenic compounds to a temperate forest.
We report fluxes and dry deposition velocities for 16 atmospheric compounds above a southeastern United States forest, including: hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), nitric acid (HNO3), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), hydroxymethyl hydroperoxide, peroxyacetic acid, organic hydroxy nitrates, and other multifunctional species derived from the oxidation of isoprene and monoterpenes. The data suggest that dry deposi...

We added 15N tracers to reference plots (receiving ambient N inputs) and to chronically fertilized plots (50 kg NH4NO3-N·ha·yr for 3 yr prior to and during tracer additions) in an oak-dominated deciduous forest and a red pine plantation in order to quantify sinks for N inputs to these forests. Plots (30 3 30 m) were located at the Harvard Forest Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) site in cent...
متن کاملSoil organic matter and litter chemistry response to experimental N deposition in northern temperate deciduous forest ecosystems
The effects of atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition on organic matter decomposition vary with the biochemical characteristics of plant litter. At the ecosystem-scale, net effects are difficult to predict because various soil organic matter (SOM) fractions may respond differentially. We investigated the relationship between SOM chemistry and microbial activity in three northern deciduous forest e...
متن کاملNitrous Oxide Emissions from In Situ Deposition of 15N-Labeled Ryegrass Litter in a Pasture Soil
323 During pasture grazing, freshly harvested herbage (litterfall) is dropped onto soils from the mouths of dairy cattle, potentially inducing nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. Although the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recommends accounting for N2O emissions from arable crop residues in national inventories, emissions from the litterfall of grazed pasture systems are not recogn...
